Iowa is the state that first elevated Obama; with one of the most consequential elections in recent history fast approaching, it's again figuring out the future. But what is it really like in the midst of these high-stakes calculations? Here's what we saw.

I arrived in Des Moines on Thursday night, just days before the first-in-the-nation caucus votes would take place on Monday, with plans to spend part of the next night at a house party in support of John Delaney, a candidate I hadn’t quite realized was still in the race.

on Twitter. Bernie Sanders’s go-to: “a black coffee and zucchini bread,” the blue-haired front-of-house manager Summer Mills told“This is the crossroads of the 2020 caucus,” J.D. Scholten, a Democratic U.S. congressional candidate running in his hometown of Sioux City, Iowa, tellsThe former professional baseball player and a staffer are strategizing at a table by the door on Scholten’s second campaign to oust Republican Rep.

On Thursday night, the group boarded a tour bus and gained “expedited entry” to President Trump’s rally at Drake University. But they planned to hit up Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, and Buttigieg rallies, too. At sunrise on Saturday, they would drive two hours to Storm Lake, where, according to their itinerary, they’ll meet a pig farmer “hit hard by the tariff war with China” and “two young Latinos” who “replaced unionized labour” in the meatpacking industry.

Even though many people—technically strangers—regard Biden as an uncle, two of his real-life nephews, Cuffe Biden Owens and Jamie Biden, are mingling with the thickening crowd at Blazing Saddle. Neither is comfortable calling Uncle Joe punk. But “he’s a guy that marches to the beat of his own drum,” Owens tells me as Green Day’s “Brain Stew” pours from the speakers. “He follows his own North Star.

The members of the “mean, green machine” are considered Iowan super-voters, who not only show up to the polls but canvass for their chosen candidates at higher rates. Hence, they don’t go to the VIPs; the VIPs come to court them, in the party room of a pizza place that opened early just for the occasion. “They’re all coming after you,” union president Lee Saunders says, with a satisfied smile.

With her own children grown, Ericson, a midwife, is now mothering the Des Moines–based Bernie brood. She leads me into the kitchen—which she stocked today with $100’s worth of turkey, cheese, apples, bananas, Cuties, protein bars, and blue corn tortilla chips—and introduces me to "ultimate mom-rade,” Sue Spicer. I attempt to read all of the many buttons on her denim vest: “Everyone's Welcome Around the Fire,” “Free College Tuition.

“I’m 23 and he looks so much healthier than me,” front desk volunteer Clarke Sonderman chimes in. “I've been having to get B-12 shots just to stay alive.” “It’s called Tinder banking,” Nguyen explains, still beaming, or using the dating app to spread a political message. He shows me his Tinder profile, which proudly announces his Yang Gang affiliation and notes he’s never been married and has no kids, only “dog alimony.”Photographed by Sinna Nasseri
