Iowa is the state that first elevated Obama; with one of the most consequential elections in recent history fast approaching, it's again figuring out the future. But what is it really like in the midst of these high-stakes calculations? Here's what we saw.

On Thursday night, the group boarded a tour bus and gained “expedited entry” to President Trump’s rally at Drake University. She leads me into the kitchen—which she stocked today with $100’s worth of turkey, cheese, apples, bananas, Cuties, protein bars, and blue corn tortilla chips—and introduces me to "ultimate mom-rade,” Sue Spicer. I attempt to read all of the many buttons on her denim vest: “Everyone's Welcome Around the Fire,” “Free College Tuition.
“I’m 23 and he looks so much healthier than me,” front desk volunteer Clarke Sonderman chimes in. “I've been having to get B-12 shots just to stay alive.” “It’s called Tinder banking,” Nguyen explains, still beaming, or using the dating app to spread a political message.
