Presidential campaigns are long slogs through the routine and predictable, punctuated by moments of dramatic surprises. That is what Democratic presidential candidates discovered anew this week, as they grappled with Iran, impeachment and money news.

The presidential field entered the New Year knowing, of course, that an impeachment trial of President Trump in the Senate would be a wild card on the table in January, and nothing occurred during the week to clarify when or how that will play out.
