The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that it is waiving the estimated tax penalty for those who filed their 2018 federal income tax returns but did not claim the waiver.
that penalty relief might be available to some taxpayers. In March of 2019, the IRS expanded the relief to include those taxpayers making payments of at least 80% of the tax shown on the return for the 2018 taxable year. .
The IRS will apply this waiver to tax accounts of all eligible taxpayers, so there is no need to contact the IRS to apply for or request the waiver. The IRS has confirmed that, over the next few months, the agency will be sending letters to affected taxpayers. Taxpayers who are eligible for relief will receive a CP 21 notice.
