Learn about the highly-mutated COVID strain BA.2.75.

It was first found in early June in India. As of July 17, it had been found in 15 countries, including seven states in the U.S., according to an Arkansas State University professor who has been tracking the variant.Infectious disease experts say there’s no cause for alarm – yet – but the variant should be watched.

But he is concerned about its spread. Right now, he says, it’s spreading faster than the BA.5 variant in India. He predicts that BA.2.75 will spread more in the United Kingdom next and then increase in the U.S. “This is exactly the pattern we’ve seen with every other variant,” he says. In a lab analysis posted on Twitter, Peking University professor Yunlong Cao found that BA.2.75 is more likely than BA.2.12.1 to escape detection by the immune system.
