Prices for Cup Series charters have gone crazy.

NASCAR is a business, same with every team that competes in the series. And businesses exist to make money. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. isn’t sure that getting into the NASCAR Cup series is good business.

When the charter system was established in 2016, NASCAR’s stated intent was stability. “The Charter agreement is delivering stability and long-term value to existing team owners while providing a clear path for ownership in the NASCAR Cup Series,” NASCAR President Steve Phelps said as the charter system was extended in 2020 to last through at least the 2024 season. “A healthy ownership structure ensures strong, competitive racing for our fans, which is a goal the industry collectively shares.

Earnhardt thinks there may be a bubble in charter prices now and there may not be the revenue available to sustain that. “Basically the teams are saying that 60- to 80-percent of the money it takes to race comes from sponsors,” says Jr. in his podcast. “If a sponsor like M&M wakes up one day and says, ‘We’re not here any more,’ that would destroy that team. And that puts the responsibility on the owner to find that 60- to 80 percent.
