The Gaza militant group launched its biggest sustained assault in years, prompting Israel's military to call up reservists and order retaliatory strikes.
Israel’s army said Sunday it regained control over southern areas but is still searching parts of the country for Hamas militants. The army also exchanged mortar fire with Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border and warned the Lebanese militant group against becoming involved in the conflict with Hamas.
Israel closed roads and crossing points in and out of the West Bank and Palestinian areas of Jerusalem, Palestinian media reported. The Israeli army also launched hundreds of airstrikes in Gaza, responding to more than 3,500 rockets fired from the strip. Thousands of Palestinians in Gaza have fled their homes, some seeking shelter in schools, in anticipation of a broader Israeli retaliation. The Israeli military said it is still working with the government to formulate a longer-term response.
