The Israeli military said its airstrikes in Gaza killed a Hamas commander who led one of last weekend’s massacres of civilians. The region is bracing for Israeli forces to launch a ground offensive.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin extended the tour of the aircraft carrier strike group now operating near Israel, the Pentagon said Tuesday. The aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, and its accompanying ships were in the eastern Mediterranean on Oct. 7 when Hamas attacked Israel.
Soon after, the U.S. ordered the strike group to move toward Israel to deter regional actors from taking advantage of the potential instability. The Ford first left its homeport in May and was scheduled to be on a six-month deployment. The Pentagon didn’t say how long Austin extended the ships’ tour for.
