Insulin costs continue to rise, so much so that almost half of people with diabetes have temporarily skipped taking their insulin, according to a 2018 survey.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mindi Patterson’s family pays nearly $1,000 each month for insulin.
In people with Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas can’t make insulin.
More than 30.3 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, and 90% to 95% of them have Type 2 diabetes, according to the 2017 National Diabetes Statistics Report. Unlike people with Type 1 diabetes, those with Type 2 can often lessen their dependence on insulin through healthier diet and exercise. “You can’t choose anything else over insulin,” said Myer, the youth and family program director at the Central Ohio Diabetes Association.
