Oakland: Legendary Danish bakery closing today after 93 years
A Taste of Denmark — the nearly century-old Oakland institution along Telegraph Avenue that was beloved for its Danishes, eclairs and ravishing cakes — abruptly shut its doors Sunday, amid concerns about rising costs and lingering slow business from the pandemic.
“We’re here to smell that fragrance one last time,” said Doug Landin, 73, a customer for at least six decades. Beside him stood longtime customers who drove in from American Canyon, Lafayette and Santa Rosa. Lingering slow sales from pandemic, along with inflation and the prospect of another recession in the coming year all factored into the decision to close, said Ramon Luna, 52, an owner of the bakery. Business remained about 30% lower than pre-pandemic levels, he said, in large part because catering orders never fully recovered.
“Everything’s just so expensive,” Luna said. “It’s just too much money. It doesn’t balance out with the sales being slow. It’s been really tough.On Sunday, a horde of loyal customers — many of them decades-long patrons of the 3401 Telegraph Ave. establishment — flocked to the bakery for one last order.
