Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall said the organization still does not know if it will remain at Chase Field for the long haul, but he wants the saga to reach a conclusion in the near future.
That said, the team also remains in regular contact with city, county and state officials about the potential to renovate Chase Field while also developing a mixed-use project surrounding it that could incorporate everything from retail and office space to a hotel. Though rumors have swirled in recent weeks about the possibility of the Diamondbacks being put up for sale, Hall shot those down, saying Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick, who, along with Jeff Royer, owns a sizable majority of the team, has no intention of selling. Hall said Kendrick “very much” enjoys owning the club and hopes to keep the team in his family.
Hall would not provide any hints about potential stadium sites, though the club’s connection to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which built the team’s spring training home, Salt River Fields, has led to speculation that tribal land could be in play. “I have heard from so many fans about how much they like the ballpark and how they have memories with their family here and they hope we stay here,” Hall said. “That weighs. It’s a factor. I think, sentimentally, the pendulum is probably swinging a bit there. But it’s a business decision and a financial decision at the end of the day with what’s best for the team and what’s best for the franchise and our fans as well.
