NASA has confirmed that there are over 5,000 planets outside of our solar system.

that the existence of 5,005 exoplanets have now been confirmed, with over 8,700 still up as candidates.

“It’s not just a number,” says NASA research scientist and the archive’s science lead, Jessie Christiansen, . “Each one of them is a new world, a brand-new planet. I get excited about every one because we don’t know anything about them.”: “Of the 5,000 exoplanets known, 4,900 are located within a few thousand light-years of us. And if you think about the fact that we’re 30,000 light-years from the center of the galaxy, if you extrapolate from the little bubble around us, that means there are many more planets in our galaxy we haven’t found yet, as many as 100 to 200 billion. It’s mind-blowing.

But what manner of planets are these? Well, the type of exoplanets found are varied: The statement notes how some “include small rock worlds like Earth, gas giants many times larger than Jupiter, and ‘hot Jupiters’ in scorchingly close orbits to their stars.” And while many of you space enthusiasts are now probably excitedly thinking that at least one of these planets must have been recognized as being perfect for human life forms, a tweet published to theNote to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.

In cold polar skies, NASA rocket will watch an active aurora turn up the heatIn cold polar skies, NASA rocket will watch an active aurora turn up the heatIf you see the northern lights overhead, chances are you are in a chilly, polar climate. But the cold-weather delights—also known as aurora borealis—high above you are actually an important source of heat. A new NASA mission hopes to fly through an active aurora to study this energy exchange process up close. The launch window for Ion-Neutral Coupling during Active Aurora, or INCAA mission, opens at the Poker Flat Research Range in Poker Flat, Alaska, on March 23.
