Slash and burn farming techniques where farmers cut down some of the vegetation and set the rest on fire might be a cheap way to clear the land, but it’s also a troubling one which leads to deforestation, soil erosion and biodiversity loss. Burning rainforests also release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. This means that these bigger and more frequent fires will increasingly make more of a contribution to climate change.
