The Mercury made it official on Tuesday: Brittney Griner is returning for the 2023 season.after being held in Russia for nine months after being convicted on drug charges, reportedly agreed on a one-year contract.
To say Griner has changed the pro basketball landscape, especially in the WNBA, would be an understatement. She was foremost on many minds throughout 2022 as she dealt with her Russian ordeal,. She comes back to the Mercury, who selected her first overall in the 2013 draft, as a member of the WNBA All-Time top 25 list, with two Olympic gold medals and two FIBA world championships along with the 2014 WNBA title.
Moreover, she owns virtually every team and league record for blocked shots, and is the only player to dunk in a regular season or playoff game since turning pro. The 6-foot-9 center out of Baylor owns 17 regular-season dunks, plus 6 more in the playoffs or all-star games. Entering the 2023 season, the rest of the league has combined for only four regular-season dunks in the WNBA’s 26 seasons.
“I do not think any of us will forget where we were on Dec. 8 when we heard BG was coming home or on Dec. 15 when she announced she intended not only to play basketball in 2023 but that it would be for the Mercury,” Mercury President of Business Operations Vince Kozar said in a statement. “And I know none of us will ever forget what it will feel like to welcome her back onto her home floor on May 21 . To know BG is to love and appreciate BG, and we can’t wait to show her that in person.
Griner’s return is the crown jewel in a busy and productive offseason for the Mercury, which included:—Acquiring forward Michaela Onyenwere, the 2021 WNBA Rookie of the Year, as part of four-team trade.—Re-signing center Megan Gustafson, guard Jennie Simms,
