Opinion: It’s time for Los Angeles’s failed governments to be broken up
If L.A. County was split up, each new county would have five county supervisors and its own public health director, registrar of voters, and sheriff, just to cite a few of the important jobs that would be more accountable, and closer geographically, to local voters.
No discussion of cracking up the current power structure would be complete without including the Los Angeles Unified School District. That’s just self-explanatory. Like the break-up of the city, the break-up of the county and school district would be ferociously opposed by the current officials in power at the local and state level. If you want them to be more cooperative, you’re going to have to use the powers of direct democracy to get their attention.
