A giant squid washed up on a beach in South Africa over the weekend.
A giant squid washed up on a beach in South Africa the other day. Beachgoers in South Africa were walking along sandy shores when they came upon the corpse of a giant squid.how the deep-sea creature’s body had washed up on Long Beach, which is located in Kommetjie, a town that’s not all too far from Cape Town.
“It was incredible to see,” writes Alison Paulus, founder of Volunteer and Explore—a wildlife conservation organization—to Live Science. “The body was around 2.2 meters [7.2 feet] alone, then with the tentacles and arms I’m sure It would have stretched to 3.5 meters [11.5 feet].”that many who became aware of this recent giant squid sighting were “left scratching their heads” as the species typically resides in the deep ocean below.
However, those who viewed the carcass afterwards deduced the squid most likely died from injuries it had gotten from a run-in with a commercial or fishing boat, passing away on the beach at some point in the night.
“We were only able to salvage a few tissue samples for Iziko as the most important pieces of the animal that could have offered us insight into aspects of the animal’s age, its diet, and cause of death had already been removed by fishermen and trophy hunters,” states wildlife officer, Jon Friedman.
