“A high-cost degree is not the key to unlocking the American Dream—hard work and personal responsibility is,” Gov. Kay Ivey and several other GOP governors said in a letter opposing President Biden's student loan forgiveness program.

The governors claimed that the burden of payment would shift to taxpayers and that residents of their states would be forced to take on other people’s payments, even if a college degree wasn’t something they chose to pursue themselves.

“I will never apologize ever helping Americans working, working Americans middle class — especially not to the same folks who voted for a $2 trillion tax cut that mainly benefited the wealthiest Americans and the biggest corporations, that slowed the economy, didn’t do a hell of a lot for economic growth, and wasn’t paid for and racked up this enormous deficit,” he said.
