Martinez, 35, hit .250 with four home runs and 13 RBIs in 23 games before he hurt his back on April 23 in Chicago – which he blamed on himself for trying to play through pain.
LOS ANGELES — Exactly one month after every position player in the Dodgers’ Opening Day lineup was last healthy, they were finally together again Friday at Dodger Stadium.
“It’s been great for about a week,” Martinez said of the back injury that cropped up on April 23 in Chicago. “It’s just been slowly building up. Monday wasn’t pretty, as far as swinging-wise, and where my swing was at. Tuesday was better. Wednesday was a lot better.” Although many players would require a minor league rehabilitation assignment after a near-three-week absence, Roberts trusted Martinez to self-report his readiness after three days’ worth of at-bats.blamed on himself“Just having him in the lineup is a presence,” Roberts said of Martinez. “We’re better with him in the lineup.”
“Michael had a good showing,” Roberts said of the 25-year-old. “He’s going to play some third, second, first base. I’m really proud of how he handled that big spot . … He took full advantage of watching major league players, how the game’s supposed to be played, the intensity, the focus, and I expect him to take that with him and join us at some point this season.
