Fox Searchlight unveils the official trailer for James Bond director Sam Mendes' new awards hopeful, EmpireOfLight, starring Olivia Colman and Micheal Ward.

The official trailer for Sam Mendes’ upcoming Empire of Light has been released. While the movie premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival this fall, and the first teaser trailer came out two months ago, little of Empire of Light has been shown to general audiences so far. Mendes made a name for himself when he won the Best Director Oscar for 1999's American Beauty and showed he had range by directing two of Daniel Craig's James Bond movies.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Fox Searchlight has released the trailer for Mendes' latest Oscar contender, Empire of Light. Already, the film is being praised for its direction, performances, and cinematography. All of those elements are shown off in the latest Empire of Light trailer, which teases the film's exploration of the relationship between Oscar-winner Olivia Colman and Micheal Ward as they navigate rising tension in their coastal town.

Movies focusing on the film industry are not uncommon among Best Picture nominees as well. Empire of Light seems to be Mendes' version of the trope, focusing on the exhibition side of things. Quentin Tarantino's Best Picture-nominated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was a love letter to the industry, using the relationship between stuntmen and actors as his way in; Damien Chazelle's La La Land is another recent example.

Mendes also seems to have surrounded himself with a crew stacked with Academy Award winners. Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins stands a good chance of getting a nomination for his likely impressive visuals. Composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have been brought on as well, and their score for The Social Network won them an Oscar their first time around, so working with Mendes opens the possibility to new sounds to tell the tale and earn them another nomination.
