James Gunn gets candid about the history of the DCEU and the SnyderVerse: 'It's been a real f-cked up journey for DC. I think there was basically no one minding the mint and they were giving out IP to any creative that smiled at whoever was in charge.'
James Gunn gets brutally candid about the former DCEU, the SnyderVerse and past DC movies as the DC Universe is about to be launched. The DCU is about to enter a whole new era following the launching of DC Studios in November 2022. Gunn and long-time DC producer Peter Safran were hired to lead the new unit for Warner Bros. Discovery. DC Studios is officially replacing the DC Films division, which was run by Walter Hamada, who left the company in 2022.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Warner Bros. recently hosted a special DC Studios-related event to present the first half of the DCU Chapter 1. Screen Rant and other press were present where Gunn and Safran spoke about the future of the new DCU. During the introduction, Gunn opened up about the complex trajectory of the DCEU and the past DC movies that came prior to DC Studios. He did not hold back as he discussed the complicated road the DC brand has been through.
I wanted to take care of these characters. We all know it's been a f-cked up road for many of them, for the past few years [...] and I really thought it is a challenge, but I think it's a possibility to create something really wonderful with these characters. [...] The history has been sh-t! It's been a real f-cked up journey for DC. I think that there was basically no one minding the mint and they were giving out IP to any creative that smiled at whoever was in charge.
Gunn's comments about the constant creative shifts behind the DCEU are something many actors and filmmakers have spoken about for years. With too many cooks in the kitchen, it was hard for many creative teams to fulfill their visions of their respective DCEU projects. The DC Films division was also in constant flux as Geoff Johns and Jon Berg's tenure didn't last for very long. After the massive critical bomb that was 2017's Justice League, Hamada was appointed to take charge.
With a half-working cinematic universe and multiple continuities, it makes sense why Gunn and Safran are essentially starting from scratch. Because of their roles, they will now provide filmmakers and creatives some leadership so previous mistakes can be avoided. Having a fresh start and an actual foundation is what DC has needed for years. With multiple DCU movies and TV shows lined up, time will tell how it plays out for Warner Bros. Discovery.
