James Joseph Hennessey, son of James David Hennessey, a Western Electric Corp. executive, and Irene Johnston Hennessey, a homemaker, was born into a Midwestern Irish Catholic family and raised in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He began his teaching career in 1960 at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, and in 1965 moved to Baltimore to join the Maryland Institute College of Art.“He was an influential instructor and I took more of Jim’s classes than any other instructor at MICA. He was a good teacher, articulate and very supportive,” Mr. Tamburrino said. “He was observant, had a critical eye, which was very valuable when you’re a student, plus he was a good storyteller.

“Jim was a figurative painter, but his paintings were not just about people,” Mr. Dudrow said. “They were not maudlin and had a certain poetry to them. He could draw very well and invented figures based on people he knew.”
