.vanderjames is on a road trip with six kids (!!!) and found the most brilliant way to tell them when his patience is low💡

. Sigh. But we love the idea of helping our kids to understand when we’re at our breaking point, or nearing it, and just need a break. Because we all deserve one from time to time—and in a family, communication is key.

As far as Van Der Beek’s saying he’s pretty sure this is “not great parenting,” we think he should give himself more credit. The trick definitely calls to mind the, a framework and curriculum that educators use to help kids identify and regulate their feelings by attaching colours to different emotions .

Commenters were quick to get behind the colour-coding idea, too, with a number of educators singing his praises. “Early child educator here– the color system is actually on point, expressing how you’re feeling and giving people a heads up is VERY healthy.

‘s Boris Hauntley closed his caption with a pretty perfect summary of parenthood. “In between… we’ve stumbled into moments of pure joy. Of discovery. Of freedom. It’s amazing how life can surprise you if you remain dogged about not getting stuck in a moment. Because sometimes… the magic lies just on the other side of chaos.”Subscribe to Today's Parent's daily newsletter for our best parenting news, tips, essays and recipes.
