Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka is out of the Olympics after losing in straight sets, just days after lighting the flame in the opening ceremony

TOKYO—Naomi Osaka’s quest for an Olympic gold medal is over, just four days after she established herself as the face of the GamesOsaka lost her third-round match here on Tuesday to world No. 42 Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-4. It was Osaka’s first tournament since she pulled out of the French Open this spring, citing mental health reasons.

“I felt really nervous being in Japan and playing here for the first time in maybe two years, and for it to be my first Olympics,” Osaka had said after cruising through her first-round match. “It was definitely really nerve-wracking.” Osaka looked even less sure of her game on Tuesday as she stumbled through the first set and found the match quickly running away from her. She was down 4-0 and two breaks of service within minutes of starting the match. Overall, Osaka won just 49% of her service points and committed a staggering 18 unforced errors in a match that lasted 1 hour and 8 minutes.
