It's by no means a new phenomenon — the first karoshi case was recorded in 1969, and the number of such victims has increased since. In 2015, 189 deaths were listed as karoshi,While Japanese politicians have passed legislation meant to prevent further deaths, experts told Business Insider that the country's toxic work culture is making the problem impossible to combat.that employees are only supposed to work 40 hours a week.
