At Sfer Ik Museion in Tulum, nature and art are one and the same.

When I enter the museum I am barefoot. The cold concrete floors provide some much-needed respite from the tropical heat of the Mayan jungle in Tulum, Mexico. Immediately I notice there is not a straight line in sight. The floor undulates. The walls are curved. The doors and windows are round. Soft light cascades through the slits on the dome ceiling made with thousands of bejuco vines. Actual trees are growing inside, and innumerable pothos plants pour their heart-shaped leaves all-around.

Although SFER IK initially opened its doors in 2019, with an exhibition by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto, it was forced to pause all activities due to the pandemic. It officially relaunched March 18th, with the installation by Azuma Makoto. The unique design of Sfer Ik inspired Makoto to create a growing, live sculpture that is meant to last for months, moving away from the more ephemeral quality of his previous projects. Towering at eight meters high , Mexx is an artificial albeit live ecosystem that seeks to harmonize with its surroundings.
