Defensive back Jayden Dalke has had an unorthodox path to his job with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
“When I was really small — and I always tell this story — my mom would tell me, ‘Hey; you’re getting beat up ; I understand.’ I’d come home crying after getting whooped by some huge dudes. She always told me she believed in me, but if I wanted to quit, it would be OK because I’d never make it to the CFL anyways.”
“That year off did it for me,” he says. “Living in camps, you get free food. It’s unlimited. I was eating 12 eggs a day, I was eating chicken breasts. All I’d do is work for 12 hours, come home, eat, go right into the gym, then go to sleep and do it all over again.” His drama coach in Leduc, Jim Nahrebeski, was a former Wildcats assistant and he’d had a son who had played for the team.Dalke spent four seasons with the Wildcats, starting in 2015, then joined the Alberta Golden Bears. He was a first-team all-Canadian in 2019, second-team in 2021, and the Roughriders called his name in the sixth round, 54th overall, in the 2022 draft.Article content
So he appreciates all of this, deeply, and he’s given much thought both to the game and to his place in it.
