The city of Akron could not provide evidence Thursday that protesters initially provoked officers, as the department said it was looking into the sequence of events leading up to the incident on Copley Road.
from the city on Twitter: “At approximately 7:57 pm officers were having bottles thrown at them from marchers. That’s when the orders to disperse were given.”
“The officers responded not by listening, not by de-escalating the situation. They responded by releasing a thick cloud of chemical smoke on the entire assembly, including children.” Miller said Wednesday night that it was unclear whether officers “had time to declare an unlawful assembly” before using pepper spray or tear gas.
Police said about 10 people were arrested Wednesday night for breaking windows of several businesses in the city’s Highland Square neighborhood and on Main Street downtown.
