A late spring hasn't been able to keep kids on base from enjoying Alaska's annual Arbor Day celebration. 🌲

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - On Tuesday, students at Aurora Elementary School on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson spent their morning getting dirty. The two fourth grade classes, with the help of an expert, learned how to plant white spruce tree saplings in honor of JBER’s Arbor Day.

“That’s inspiring to me, to see kids wanting to participate in Arbor Day and having such fun with it,” natural resource manager Cayley Elsik said. Elsik said last year students were able to plant the tree directly into the ground. This year, however, the soil was not ready for planting yet due to the cold.

That did not stop the smiles and laughter on Tuesday as students learned how to nurture their own white spruce tree.

Ukraine flags block Russian ambassador's path on Victory DayUkraine flags block Russian ambassador's path on Victory DayA large installation representing Russian atrocities in Ukraine blocked the path of Russia’s ambassador to Poland as he sought to lay a wreath at a Warsaw memorial to Soviet soldiers. The installation Tuesday, Russia’s Victory Day holiday, included hundreds of fluttering blue and yellow Ukrainian flags and crosses serving as symbolic grave markers for Ukrainians killed by Russians during the full-scale war launched by Moscow last year. The protesters, mostly Ukrainians but also Poles, blocked Ambassador Sergey Andreev’s passage to the memorial. With his path blocked, Andreev instead left a wreath of red carnations in front of the hundreds of Ukrainian flags fluttering in the wind as loudspeakers blasted the sounds of bombs and missiles.
