Jenni Hermoso’s complaint stems from Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales grabbing and kissing her after Spain won the women’s World Cup.
Spain’s High Court prosecutor opened a preliminary investigation Aug. 28 into whether Rubiales might have committed an act of sexual aggression. The decision followed a number of complaints by third parties and was based on a statement issued by the midfielder, who said she felt the victim of a “sexist act.”
However, for the authorities to be able to investigate the case, they needed the victim to report the case herself. Hermoso finally declared on Tuesday at the attorney general’s office. It will most likely be the Spanish National High Court who examines the case because the alleged crime was committed by a Spanish citizen in a foreign country.The incident unleashed a wave of criticism in Spain with many, including members of the government, asking for Rubiales’s resignation. Instead, in a defiant speech, the football official blamed the turmoil on “fake feminism” and the press, said the kiss was consensual and accused Hermoso of lying.
The Sports Administrative Court in Spain, however, only found his behavior a potentially serious breach of the Spanish sports law and not a “very serious” fault, which made it impossible for the government to demand his indefinite suspension as president of the soccer federation.
