In a new interview, Lopez revealed that the awards praise for Hustlers has overwhelmed her: “I literally sat in my bed yesterday, and they were sending me all the reviews. I could not believe it. I was crying.'
In the scam story, Lopez plays Ramona, a stripper who runs a scheme ripping off her bro-y Wall Street clientele. It’s a thrilling performance, one that has earned Lopez early Oscar buzz out of the Toronto International Film Festival. In a recent SiriusXM radio interview with“I’ve just been working hard for so long, for my whole life, so it’s nice,” she said. She paused, tearing up.
“I literally sat in my bed yesterday, and they were sending me all the reviews,” she added. “I could not believe it. I was crying. Me and my girlfriend of 20 years were sitting there, and she was trying to film me…. I was like, ‘Oh my God.’” Kotb pressed Lopez to explain why she was feeling so emotional. “You work hard your whole life, and you wonder if anybody notices, in a sense, on that level, to be in that conversation,” Lopez explained. “You have dreams when you’re a little girl of being there [at the Oscars], you know what I mean?”
Despite her lengthy acting career, Lopez has yet to receive any prestigious awards from the various guilds and groups and academies that decide such things —though she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her breakout turn inbuzz is any indication, though, all that will be rectified this awards season, culminating with Lopez’s presence at the 2020 Oscars.
