Retiring Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White said Thursday that he’s endorsing Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia to succeed him in the post he’s held for more than 20 years.
“As it was in 1998, this year’s election for Secretary of State will also be historic. I made history as the first African American to be elected Secretary of State. And Anna will make history as the first woman and first Latina to be elected Secretary of State,” White said in a statement.
The other Democratic candidate is Ald. David Moore, 17th. Republican state Rep. Dan Brady of Bloomington and John Milhiser, a former U.S. Attorney in the Central District of Illinois, are seeking the GOP nomination. Those endorsements came even as some Democratic Party officials have expressed a desire for a person of color to replace White, who is Black. Giannoulias is white and Moore is Black.
Aside from White’s endorsement, Valencia has secured the back of both Illinois Democratic U.S. senators, Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth. Valencia ran Durbin’s 2014 reelection campaign. She’s also been endorsed by Democratic U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood of Naperville. “He made history as our first Black Secretary of State, and I look forward to earning the votes of Illinoisans to make history as the first woman and first woman of color to hold the office,” Valencia said.
