The Jets have legitimate playoff aspirations this season but will need a lot of things to go right, including the continued development of quarterback Sam Darnold.

Early in camp, the Jets coaxed former Carolina Panther center Ryan Kalil out of retirement for a one-year, $8.4 million deal. Unproven kicker Taylor Bertolet, who was in camp with the Jets in 2018, was re-signed when veteran Chandler Catanzaro retired unexpectedly. After a shaky game against Atlanta, Bertolet may have solidified his spot with a 56-yard field goal versus New Orleans. Dynamic Greg Dortch, an undrafted free agent from Wake Forest, has impressed on punt returns.
Darnold began preseason with two very sharp touchdown drives against the Giants and Falcons, but struggled against the Saints behind an offensive line that was missing two starters. Darnold has the physical tools and demeanor to handle the demands of the position, but must improve in his decision-making and reading of defenses to unlock his full potential.
