The New York Jets might be shuffling their offensive line again. Here's what it says about the future of Mekhi Becton.
has done everything the team has asked of him through the first seven games of the season. Most notably, after missing nearly two full seasons he’s remained on the field for 98 percent of the team’s offensive snaps in a year when the line has been decimated by injury.
But after missing 33 straight games in 2021 and 2022 with devastating knee injuries, Becton has responded to coach Robert Saleh’s public challenge during training camp: fight through discomfort and prove that he can be a reliable part of their offensive line.
But he acknowledged that switching back to the right side is a “totally different position” and he’ll have to put in “extra work” to get it right. And make no mistake, staying on the left side is the best chance for Becton to continue to build consistency and continue to improve into the player the Jets thought he might be when they drafted him No. 11 overall in 2020., before it seemed likely the Jets would switch him back to right tackle. “He’s home. Keeping Becton on the left side seems like a no-brainer, especially after Brown struggled mightily returning from offseason shoulder surgery to start the season — including a brutal game at Dallas before he went on injured reserve with a hip injury. But when you’re banking on a 38-year-old to be the stabilizing force on the offensive line — as the Jets were with Brown throughout training camp and the preseason before he returned — you’re taking a risk.
