Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, talks with reporters as House Republicans meet again behind closed doors to find a path to elect a new speaker after House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., dropped out of the race Thursday night, at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Oct. 13, 2023.
“I think both candidates made a good presentation,” U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, a Marietta Republican who supports Jordan, said during a meeting break. “They were stressing the same things: How do we get back on track? How do we address the fiscal crisis? How do we support Israel? How do we secure the border. How are you going to run this place?”
Those committee positions and his staunch defense of former President Donald Trump has made the conservative firebrand a favorite in hard-right circles, but a lightning rod for Democrats. Trump publicly backed Jordan for speaker against Scalise, and Jordan has been a fierce ally to Trump on Capitol Hill,
Davidson and U.S. Rep. Max Miller, a Rocky River Republican, had expressed hope Republicans wouldn’t immediately adjourn after one candidate secures a majority, and would instead keep the meeting going so that candidate could address issues that might keep colleagues from backing them and reaching the 217 vote threshold.
Although the vote was anonymous, Cammack said Jordan has a list of people he thinks he needs to target. After the vote, she said Jordan encouraged everyone who opposed him to approach him and work through the issues they have.
