Obituary: Joe Smith, a 'middle-class guy,' put Elvis on the radio and signed the Grateful Dead to a record deal
In 1966, Warner Bros. Records needed to tap into the hippie-trippy music coming out of San Francisco. Joe Smith, a Warner executive wearing what he called a “blue Bank of America suit,” arranged to meet the Grateful Dead.
“Weird things were happening, and the smell of dope [was] in the air,” Mr. Smith said in an interview for “Long Strange Trip,” a 2017 documentary. “I realized I wasn’t in the Dean Martin era anymore.” The Dead seemed unimpressed with Mr. Smith but signed a recording contract.
