As her film JohnWick4 breaks box office records, RinaSawayama is smashing stereotypes as a Japanese-British pansexual woman in music and film. Here's how Sawayama celebrates her differences on her own terms: Photographer: Johnson Lui Stylist: Anna…

, she has, over the years, developed a partnership of trust and cultural understanding that Sawayama holds dear. “I don’t want to be stereotyped for my looks. I don’t want to look anime," she says. "It’s been such a consideration. I don’t want to look like a stereotype of Asian people, of Japanese women, in particular. And he totally got that. To have someone who understands the politics of beauty, the politics of appearance, when they’re dealing with a woman of color, it’s fortunate.

Sawayama continues, "I’ve worked with so many makeup artists over the years and I’m still always impressed when I work with a makeup artist who gets my eye shape, who knows monolids, who understands Asian undertones, and when I work with photographers who don’t make me look like a gray corpse with no dimension. I don’t have a nose bridge, so you can’t light me the same way. These things matter.” When they get it right, Sawayama notices.

Who she is — a musician, actor, and sometime model — has given her visibility in spaces that rarely celebrate people like her: a Japanese British pansexual woman. Still, she’s had to knock down doors, even in places she considers home. Though she grew up in London from the age of five, Sawayama and her fan base campaigned for a year for her to be considered for the music industry BRIT Awards and the Mercury Prize.

“It’s humbling,” Sawayama says, “because it takes little steps like that for the world to start changing, but it takes decades for things to actually change. You see that so clearly in movies and in music. I could have just tweeted at them and said something shady. But my team suggested we do something that might create a change in the long game. It’s funny, I feel like my degree has somehow come into play.” She’s referring to her degree in political science from Magdalene College, Cambridge.
