As it swings from manufacturing for export toward a consumption-led mix driven by tech and leisure, Zhao is putting money into the businesses serving the country’s hundreds of millions of increasingly leisured middle classes. He loves big data and believes China’s vast scale gives it an advantage over others in data science, biotech and movies. Film and TV player Linmon Pictures, Korean VFX player Dexter and Hollywood’s STX Entertainment are just some of his portfolio investments.
