Jordan Burroughs captured another world title at the 2022 Senior men's freestyle world championships in Belgrade, Serbia. He went 5-0 to win gold at 79 kilograms (174 pounds), capped by a 4-2 finals victory over Iran's Mohammad Nokhodilarimi.
Jordan Burroughs has been the face of USA Wrestling for more than a decade, and this week, the 34-year-old set a new bar for all American wrestlers moving forward.
"It feels amazing," Burroughs said in an interview with USA Wrestling."All I can say is God is good." Nine of the 10 U.S. men's freestyle wrestlers wrestled for medals, and all 10 ultimately contributed to the final team score. In all, the U.S. men's freestyle team combined for a 37-7 overall record at the world championships.
"This one means more to me," Taylor told USA Wrestling shortly after beating Iran's Hassan Yazdanicharati 7-1 in the finals. Yazdanicharati beat Taylor 6-2 in the 2021 world finals just a few months after Taylor beat Yazdanicharati 4-3 for Olympic gold. The other four medalists all finished as the runners-up at their respective weights:Yianni Diakomihalis, at 65 kilos , who will be a senior wrestler at Cornell this winter and became the first U.S.
Russia won the men's freestyle world team titles in 2021, 2019, and 2018. In February, the International Olympic Committee asked all international governing bodies to bar Russia from their world championship events due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The New Jersey native stands alone atop the American wrestling mountain with seven world and Olympic titles. His 10 total world and Olympic medals trails only Bruce Baumgartner, who won 13 between 1983-96, in American wrestling history.
