The House was unable to elect a new speaker on the first ballot as a handful of Republicans refused to support Rep. Jim Jordan's bid to become speaker,

Congress is now voting in a historic election for a new House speaker.by AUSTIN DENEAN | The National DeskRep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, seated center, talks to Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, right, and a House staff member, left, as Republicans try to elect Jordan, a top Donald Trump ally, to be the new House speaker, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023, as former Speaker of the House Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., sits behind them.

Democrats have yet to provide a single vote for a Republican speaker nominee this Congress, and on Tuesday criticized Jordan's nomination, describing him as an "architect of a nationwide abortion ban, a vocal election denier and an instigator of an insurrection." The vote comes two after Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was voted out of the speakership by eight Republicans and all Democrats in a move spearheaded by Florida Republican Matt Gaetz, who has been a publicly enthusiastic supporter of Jordan.Scalise, R-La.

A single lawmaker can raise a “motion to vacate,” spurring a full floor vote that only requires a majority to remove the speaker. With a slim majority, any Republican speaker can only lose a handful of the party’s votes and survive with Democrats’ united support of the motion.
