In the women’s race, a trio of pacemakers were employed to hit halfway in 68:30, but Kosgei and the others opted not to follow them in the opening miles, creating a bizarre scenario of the lead pack running several seconds behind the pacemakers through much of the race’s first half. At 30K, reached in 1:37:29, only five athletes remained at the front, with Jepkosgei still the most willing to push things along. However, it was only when she reached the drinks station at 35K that she truly dropped the hammer. Kosgei was the first to crack, drifting off the back, and then Salpeter—her fellow Olympian—also lost contact.
