Lawyers for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said a law that restored voting rights to convicted felons should be struck down unless a federal appeals court intervenes
TALLAHASSEE — Lawyers for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state’s top election official said a landmark measure that restored voting rights to some 1.4 million convicted felons should be struck down unless a federal appeals court intervenes.
In October, Hinkle issued an opinion saying that Florida could not deny voting rights to people who owed money if they could not afford to pay. That preliminary injunction, however, applied only to the people who had filed the lawsuit against the state. “The Governor will consider options put forward on addressing a pathway for those who are indigent and unable to address their outstanding financial obligations,” Ferré said in her written remarks.
After a back-and-forth, Jazil, an attorney representing Secretary of State Laurel Lee, said that striking down Amendment 4 would be an “absurd outcome.” But both Jazil and Primrose, deputy general counsel for DeSantis, said it was their position that the voter-approved measure could be found unconstitutional if an appeals court upholds Hinkle’s October ruling.
DeSantis, who opposed passage of Amendment 4, called on legislators to clarify the meaning of the measure and later called its passage a “mistake.”
