U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon set a trial date of May 20, 2024, for former President Donald Trump's classified documents case, according to court documents released Friday.

The trial is set to begin less than two months before the Republican National Convention, and likely after the GOP nominee for president is all but officially set. "By conservative estimates, the amount of discovery in this case is voluminous and likely to increase in the normal course as trial approaches," Cannon, a Trump appointee, wrote in her order. "And, while the Government has taken steps to organize and filter the extensive discovery, no one disagrees that Defendants need adequate time to review and evaluate it on their own accord.
