Jared E. Smith, who lost his bid for re-election as a circuit court judge in August, has been appointed to a Florida court of appeal by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Jared E. Smith, a judge in the 13th Circuit Court, will fill one of the seats on the newly created 6th District Court of Appeal, the governor's office announced on Tuesday. He will take office on January 1.
The judge made headlines in January for refusing to let a 17-year-old get an abortion on the basis that her grades showed herJared E. Smith lost his bid for re-election in August after a controversial abortion ruling. He has been appointed to a higher court by Florida's Republican governor, Ron DeSantis.Smith ruled that the appellant, a junior in high school, was not"sufficiently mature to decide whether to terminate her pregnancy," as required under Florida law.
