June was a busy month for exchanges, with two significant hacks targeted XRP trading exchanges with more than 33,000,000 XRP (~ USD 13,000,000) stolen from 2 exchanges: Gatehub and Bitrue.
On June 26 several large withdrawals were made from Bitrue’s hot wallet totalling more than 9,300,000 XRP, close to emptying the exchanges hot wallet.
We worked around the clock to make this happen, but I’m incredibly happy now that we’ve completed this task successfully, and now we’re back on track with developing new features and promoting our platform token. Every single dollar that our users place on Bitrue shows that they trust us, and that trust means the world to us, so we’re keeping the safety of our users at the forefront of our minds in everything we do.
As of today, after more than a month, less than 1,000,000 XRP remains in custody of the attackers while exchanges used by the attackers have withheld an undisclosed amount – there have been no further updates from Gatehub, but Enej Pungerčar, Founder and CEO of GateHub comments: Once these legal procedures are completed we will know the exact amount of funds that our customers will be able to retrieve. Until then we kindly ask our customers to remain patient and report thefts to their local law enforcement agencies in case they haven’t done so alreadyUnlike Bitrue, Gatehub is not a traditional exchange.
