in a federal bribery case. That charity — Universal Companies, founded by legendary music producer Kenny Gamble — sought Johnson’s assistance to protect properties it owned from seizure and to pass zoning legislation that substantially increased the real estate value of another. Johnson, Chavous, and the two other codefendants in the case — former Universal executives Rahim Islam and Shahied Dawan — maintain that the government has twisted the facts to make out a bribery case.
Gamble has not been accused of wrongdoing and prosecutors have described him as a victim of Islam and Dawan’s deception. Johnson and Chavous each face two counts of honest services fraud, each of which carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
