Chantel Worley, 29, was riding her bike when she was killed Tuesday. She had been looking forward to getting a place of her own and caring for her 3-year-old daughter.
Chantel Worley was looking forward to finding a place to live and taking care of her 3-year-old daughter Tues., Dec. 27, 2022, when she was fatally hit by a tractor-trailer while riding a bicycle on Cameron Street in Harrisburg. She was 29.Chantel Worley didn’t have a home this Christmas, but that wasn’t going to stop her from celebrating the holiday with her 3-year-old daughter.
Worley was one of the many people living in Harrisburg’s tent cities. Friends said she and her boyfriend lived in a tent near the PennDOT building. Although they sometimes panhandled for money, they also received food, clothing and other resources fromTim Walter, an Eclipse Project volunteer, met Worley and her boyfriend one Sunday about two months ago while he was handing out food and drinks under the Mulberry Street bridge.
“Her outlook, her personality, it couldn’t have been more positive,” he said. “She affected everybody who got to know her, almost immediately. She was a very sweet person who despite their situation was loving life.” A year or two ago, Chantel Worley survived a car fire that left second and third-degree burns on her body. Her daughter’s ability to survive that crash, addiction, homelessness and other hardships made it even more of a shock when Chantel died riding her bike.
Schreffler said Cameron Street will be patched, lighting will be improved and crosswalks will be repainted. A longer pedestrian signal will also be implemented at the Cameron and Market intersection, an area where the city has logged four deaths since last year. “It’s a very busy drag. It’s one of the main drags that go in and out of the city,” Bullock said of Cameron Street, adding that it’s “not advisable” to be on a bike on Cameron Street.
