Brendon Urie, DemiLovato, Sia & more weigh in on the TaylorSwift & Scooter Braun situation
Well, that escalated quickly. As most folks were happily going about their weekend or getting set for the week at work, a music biz bombshell dropped with news of Scooter Braun’s acquisition of Big Machine Label Group. The fallout from it has yet to clear.
In a deal worth an estimated $300 million, Braun's Ithaca Holdings announced on Sunday it had acquired Scott Borchetta's Big Machine, and with it the entire, six-album catalogSwift was horrified by it all. In a social post, Taylor said she learned of the deal "as it was announced to the world," and that the situation brought her back to "the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at [Braun's] hands for years.
Justin Bieber, one of Braun’s best-known clients, stepped in and sided with his manager. In a post, he wrote, “for you to take it to social media and get people to hate on scooter isn’t fair. What were you trying to accomplish by posting that blog? seems to me like it was to get sympathy u also knew that in posting that your fans would go and bully scooter."
And now, Borchetta has stepped in to call BS on Swift’s claims that she woke up to the news "when everyone else did.” The Big Machine founder event took exception to several of Swift’s points, including the suggestion that she was “in tears or close to it” any time Braun’s name was brought up. In Swift's camp you’ll find Halsey and collaborators Joseph Kahn, Todrick Hall and many others. And on the sidelines, the world’s media is watching on, fingers at the keyboard, popcorn close by.
