The San Marcos hospital, which cost about $600 million, has 162 beds in patient rooms compared with 253 at San Diego Medical Center. “San Marcos Medical Center is a full-service community hospital,” Villalobos said. “If you’re coming in and you need your gallbladder removed, if you’re sick and need to be admitted for observation, if you need to deliver a baby, even if you’re having twins, you can come here.” Extensive medical equipment fills a C-section room in the Maternal Child Health Department at the new Kaiser San Marcos Medical Center.And, as is the case with each new Kaiser hospital, this design is informed by the experiences of caring for patients in its predecessors not just in San Diego but in many other locations including Anaheim, Irvine and Moreno Valley.
“It’s just more efficient, and that is always what we are looking to improve when we try to learn from what has come before,” Villalobos said. Initially heralded as a way to significantly reduce the number of patient falls, Lalich said experience has taught otherwise.
