Six years have passed since 2017's Detroit, but Oscar-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow has begun filming her new project, Smuggler.
, and Detroit. For The Hurt Locker, a war thriller about an American bomb disposal team in the Iraq War, Bigelow became the first woman to win Best Director at the Oscars. In total, The Hurt Locker won six Oscars, including Best Picture.
For her work on Zero Dark Thirty, the dramatization of the hunt for Osama bin Laden post-9/11, Bigelow received a nomination for Best Picture alongside Mark Boal and Megan Ellison. Detroit, Bigelow’s next film about Detroit’s 1967 12th Street Riot, received mixed reviews and only grossed $26 million worldwide against a $34 million budget.
