Katie Ledecky took second in the finals of the women’s 400-meter freestyle in 3:57.36, just 0.67 seconds behind Australian phenom Ariarne Titmus
TOKYO—Katie Ledecky’s quest for five Olympic medals got under way at Tokyo Aquatic Center on Monday morning. But her first piece of hardware came in an unexpected color: silver.
Ledecky took second in the finals of the women’s 400-meter freestyle in 3:57.36, just 0.67 seconds behind Australian phenom Ariarne Titmus, in one of the most hotly anticipated races of the Olympic swim meet. Ledecky controlled the race through the first 340 meters, but was unable to match Titmus’s closing speed on the final lap.
“I could see her out of the corner of my eye and knew that she wasn’t fading at all, but I felt like I was still right there and I certainly didn’t fall off or anything,” said Ledecky. “She just came home in 28 [seconds].”“On the last lap we were both breathing the opposite way. I had no idea where she was and we were both just going for it,” said Titmus. “I was excited that to win this event I had to beat a great champion.
