— has decided to run roughshod over these past processes, because of a newly passed policy. Their directive ignores and invalidates the work of these committees. It removes books that were either already banned, or which do not face any current objection whatsoever.

School boards do have leeway to set curriculum; but particularly when it comes to school libraries, they are supposed to respect students’ First Amendment rights to access information. Parents have an important role to play in their children’s education too, but when it comes to public institutions, these kinds of processes must be facilitated in a fair, consistent and rational manner.

Young people learn best when they’re exposed to a wide range of views and life experiences, especially those that may be different from their own. What lesson should LGBTQ teenagers or students of color take away from adults deciding that their stories have no place in the classroom?
